Historians believe that vinegar was created by accident, and that our ancestors learned to use this sour product as a preservative, a disinfectant, and a refreshing drink. As far back as ancient Babylon, vinegar was used to preserve meat and vegetables for longer periods; the Romans drank diluted vinegar to improve digestion and disinfect food at the same time. Recommendations for using vinegar for medicinal purposes can also be found in the writings of Hippocrates.

The pear vinegar we offer is fermented in Latvia, in the Kuldīga region, using traditional vinegar-fermenting methods and premium ingredients. This vinegar is fermented from pure pear juice (99.94%), preserving all the valuable nutrients and aroma of the pears.

Pear vinegar is a specialty of regions where pear trees are grown—including Latvia, where people ferment various fruit and berry vinegars at home and use them as a natural condiment and remedy. Pear vinegar is fermented from pear juice when bacteria, under the influence of heat and air, transform the juice into vinegar. Pear vinegar has a mild, tangy taste and a fruity aroma. It works well as a zesty addition to vegetable salads and as an ingredient in cold sauces, replacing wine or apple cider vinegars.

Pear vinegar is often used to boost health by mixing it with water. The simplest recipe is: add 1 tablespoon of pear vinegar to a glass of water and drink it before or after a meal. This drink:

  • Helps improve the digestive process by activating enzymes that break down proteins into amino acids.

  • Helps prevent the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the small intestine.

  • Helps absorb minerals: calcium, iron, and magnesium, as they require a certain acidity level to be absorbed properly.

  • Helps absorb vitamins: K, C, and B12.

  • Helps reduce intestinal gas, alleviate acid reflux, and stimulate bile production.

  • Helps lower insulin and cholesterol levels.

Classic "Vinaigrette" Cold Dressing Recipe: In a small bowl, pour 2 tablespoons of pear vinegar, add 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt, and a little ground black pepper. Mix them together and add 6 tablespoons of oil (olive oil, sunflower seed oil, macadamia nut oil, avocado oil, or pumpkin seed oil work well here), then whisk all the ingredients into a smooth dressing. This dressing goes great with leafy greens, vegetable salads, steamed vegetables, and baked or stewed fish and meat.

Honey and Mustard Dressing Recipe: In a small bowl, pour 2 tablespoons of pear vinegar, add 2 teaspoons of wholegrain mustard, 2 teaspoons of liquid honey, a pinch of salt, and a little ground black pepper. Mix them together and add 6 tablespoons of oil (olive oil or sunflower seed oil work well here, along with 1 teaspoon of macadamia nut oil for extra flavor), then whisk all the ingredients into a smooth dressing. This dressing goes great with leafy greens, vegetable salads, steamed vegetables, and baked or stewed fish and meat.
